Pet portrait on a sweatshirt - how to prepare a photo of your dog or cat for embroidery?
A sweatshirt with a dog or cat portrait is one of those customizations that has much greater value than a simple print or a random pattern. For many people, a pet is a member of the family, so being able to put their image on clothing creates a truly personal keepsake.
However, for the finished embroidery to accurately reflect the animal's appearance, the photo used to create the design is crucial. The good news is that you don't need a professional photo shoot or an expensive camera. In most cases, a suitable photo taken with a phone will be perfectly sufficient.
However, it is worth paying attention to a few things.

Why does photo quality matter?
Computer embroidery differs from ordinary printing. The design is not simply applied to the material in the identical form as the photograph. The photo must first be properly processed, simplified, and converted into a design that can be executed with thread.
The most important features of the pet – the shape of the muzzle, fur color, characteristic patches, eyes, or ears – should be clearly visible in the photograph itself.
The better the photo, the easier it is to create a design that resembles a specific dog or cat, and not just a representative of a given breed.
1. Choose a front-facing photo
Photos where the animal's face is directed straight at the camera or at a slight angle work best.
A profile picture can also look interesting, but if you want a classic pet portrait, a front-facing photo usually best captures its characteristic features.
It's also important to make sure the animal's head isn't heavily tilted or obscured.

2. Ensure good lighting
Natural light definitely makes it easier to prepare the design.
It's best to take the photo during the day, for example:
-
by a large window,
-
on a balcony,
-
on a terrace,
-
during a walk,
-
in a well-lit room.
Avoid very dark photos and photos taken in strong artificial light. If part of the face is in deep shadow, some details of the fur may be more difficult to distinguish.
Soft, diffused daylight is a good solution.
3. The photo should be sharp
One of the most common problems is photos where the pet looks great, but the photo is blurry.
Details are important when preparing a portrait. Among other things, the eyes, nose, shape of the ears, and boundaries of individual fur colors should be visible.
This does not mean that the photo must have a huge resolution. Much more important is that the animal's face is clear and in focus.

4. Do not take the photo from too far away
If the dog or cat occupies a small part of the photograph, zooming in on the picture may result in a lack of details needed to prepare the design.
Portrait photos, where the head and upper part of the pet's body are clearly visible, work best.
However, there's no need for an extreme close-up. It's important that the entire muzzle fits within the frame.
5. Do not obscure important elements
If you want the most accurate representation of your pet, it's best to choose a photo where its face is not obscured.
Problems could include, for example:
-
a hand in front of the muzzle,
-
a toy held in its teeth,
-
a blanket covering part of its head,
-
another animal directly in front of the pet,
-
a harness or other elements heavily covering the eyes.
Of course, this doesn't mean every such photo is useless. In many cases, the design can still be prepared. However, if you have several photos to choose from, it's worth submitting the clearest one.
6. Show your pet's distinctive features
This is especially important for animals with unusual fur patterns.
If your dog has a distinctive patch above one eye or your cat has multicolored fur fragments, choose a photo where these features are clearly visible.
It's these small elements that make the finished portrait look like a specific pet.
At Haftuyemy, each design is prepared based on the submitted photo, so we do not use one universal pattern for a given breed.
Is a phone photo enough?
Absolutely.
Most modern phones take photos of sufficient quality for preparing an embroidery design.
Much more important than the phone model are:
-
appropriate lighting,
-
sharpness,
-
visible muzzle,
-
lack of heavy filters,
-
appropriate distance from the animal.
Sometimes a simple photo taken with a phone by the window is much better material than a photo from a professional camera taken in a dark room.
Can an old photo of a pet be used?
Yes.
It's not always possible to take a new photo. Especially when the portrait is meant to be a keepsake of a pet, we often only have older photographs available.
In such a situation, it's worth sending the best available photo. If you have several similar photos, you can also choose the one where the pet's distinctive features are most visible.
Even an older photo can be a good basis for preparing a portrait if the animal's face is clearly visible in it.
What should be avoided?
The most difficult to use are usually:
-
very dark photographs,
-
heavily blurred photos,
-
screenshots taken from videos,
-
photos downloaded from messaging apps after heavy compression,
-
photographs where the pet is very far away,
-
photos with very strong filters,
-
photographs with an obscured muzzle.
If possible, it's best to send the original photo file from your phone's gallery.
Does the background of the photo matter?
In most cases, no.
You don't need to place your dog or cat in front of a white wall or specially prepare a place for photography.
When creating the design, we focus primarily on the pet, so incidental elements in the background usually don't matter much.
Much more important is good lighting for the animal itself.

How is a portrait prepared for embroidery?
After receiving the photo, the design preparation begins.
The photograph is converted into a form suitable for embroidery. This requires finding a balance between maintaining likeness to the pet and the capabilities of computer embroidery.
Not every single hair visible in the photo will be reproduced with a separate thread. The key is to preserve the most important elements, such as:
-
head shape,
-
eyes,
-
nose,
-
ears,
-
distinctive fur pattern,
-
key color transitions.
This ensures the embroidery remains clear even from a greater distance.
Dog or cat – does it matter?
The photo preparation guidelines are essentially the same.
For cats, the eyes and the fur pattern on the face can be particularly important. For dogs, the shape of the ears, muzzle, and distinctive fur markings often play a significant role.
It also doesn't matter whether it's a purebred animal or a mixed breed. The design is created based on a specific photo.
A pet portrait as a gift idea
A personalized sweatshirt with a dog or cat can also be a great gift idea for a pet owner.
You can use a photo of:
-
the current pet,
-
a dog or cat from childhood,
-
several pets,
-
a pet that is no longer with us.
This makes the clothing more than just another sweatshirt – it reminds you of a specific pet and shared moments.
What photo to send? A brief summary
The best photo for preparing a pet portrait should primarily be bright, sharp, and clear.
If you can clearly see the eyes, nose, ears, and characteristic fur pattern of your dog or cat in it, there's a good chance it will be a suitable basis for creating a design.
However, don't worry about the background, professional camera, or ideal photo composition.
Your pet is what matters most.
At Haftuyemy, we prepare personalized dog and cat portraits based on photos submitted by clients, and then transfer the prepared design onto clothing using computer embroidery.
So, if you have a favorite photo of your dog or cat in your gallery, it might just be the basis for a unique sweatshirt with its portrait.
